“What luck!” my friend said.
“But my daughter wanted Dottie for her birthday tomorrow.”
“Relax. The lobster is hot stuff. It’s worth two hippos and a pelican easy. Then you can trade up for Freckles the Leopard. Combine Freckles and Puglsey and you’ll equal a Dotty.”
I stared at my friend and tried to decipher what she had said. I wasn’t even sure she was speaking English.
“When’s the next delivery?” I asked the cashier.
“The day after tomorrow.”
“That’s too late!” I threw myself over the counter. “Do something!”
“Don’t worry,” my friend pried my hands off the cashier’s collar. “I’ll help you.”
I arrived home several hours later. I was hot, tired, and hungry, but I had Dottie tucked in my purse.
“What took so long?” my husband asked. “We were worried. You spent all that time looking for a stuffed animal?”
