enjoy gingerbread decorating at 2nd Street Cafe and a feed the birds workshop at Courthouse Plaza. There is an $8 fee for the gingerbread fun but participants can take their creations home. The bird fun is free.
On Friday, Dec. 4 the holiday spirit gets into high gear with Main Street’s Festival of Lights. See elves on parade (area children); ride in a horse drawn wagon; hear the Girl Scout choir; watch the lighting of the town Christmas tree and witness jolly-old Saint Nick’s arrival. Following the parade the John Barton Payne Building turns into a holiday fantasy land for children with the annual Gumdrop Square — a tiny village devoted to elf-sized revelry where Santa will check his list twice, and fill holiday orders.
Gumdrop Square has 12, 7-12 foot Christmas trees decorated by local artisans; a model train set courtesy of the Piedmont Railroaders; fantasy theme shops such as a Teddy bear store and an antique doll boutique, and a secret store where little ones can shop with some elf-like assistance from local cheerleaders.
Six thousand dollars worth of material and hundreds of unpaid volunteers go into designing the fantasy village that brings in visitors from throughout the state and beyond.
