“A shipment of Beanie Babies arrives tomorrow at 9 a.m.,” my friend whispered over the phone late Saturday night. “Meet me out front in 20 minutes. Don’t forget your check book.” The line went dead and I ran to put on my sweats and tennis shoes before she arrived.
It was slightly reminiscent of my college days, but instead of spending the night in line with a bunch of friends to see a Rolling Stones concert I was spending the night with a group of desperate mothers to see the newest delivery of Beanie Babies (small stuffed animals with a retail price of about $5). Somehow between marriage and motherhood Smoochie the Frog had achieved Mick Jagger status.
When we arrived several mothers were already in line.
