In the vast multitude of
Christmas traditions, buying
and exchanging gifts is little
more than a festive footnote.
The holiday season, marked by challenging weather and marginally adequate shelter, has long been a time for figurative warmth.
Village fires, communal meals, parties, dances and time spent with family and friends were the options enjoyed by our ancestors. And in Fauquier County there is plenty to enjoy beyond the shops loaded with tempting wares.
rauquier Community Theatre’s production of “It’s a Wonderful Life,” a lively musical version of the family favorite, opens on Nov. 28. The production will play weekends through the middle of December. Call 349-2404.
Christmas Parades in Old Town Warrenton and on Marshall’s Main Street on Dec.5 are a great way to catch some festive spirit and, of course, welcome Santa Claus.
Fauquier County’s Parks and Recreation department offers other ways to catch Old St. Nick. Send a letter from Santa to one of your prized elves. The service costs $2 for residents and $3 for non-residents, and all of the letters will be mailed by Dec. 15. Pick up a copy of the Parks & Rec Good Times magazine for registration forms, or call 347-6894.
Santa or Mrs. Claus will be making phone calls to area children from Dec. 14-18. The registration form, due by Dec. 9, is also in the Good limes magazine, or call 347-6896. The service is free, thanks to the Retired Senior Volunteer Program.
