school supplies for teachers, and in her larger store, there is even more for educators.
“We carved out a teacher’s section when we moved to this spot,” McMann said, “and teachers have always shopped with us. There is a strong home-schooling movement out here, and a lot of them come in and shop with us.”
Some might think a small-town toy store would be in deep water in the face of competition from the megasized toy stores. McMann doesn’t see it that way.
“First of all, we carry a different product, and second, we can offer services that they can’t. We have a very knowledgeable staff. A person can come in here and we can say, This is good for a 5-year-old child.’ “
Have fun
“Basically we try to have a heck of a lot of fun,” McMann said.
So her store is packed with balloon animals kits; pedal go and fun wheels; books and trains; costumes and games; and science kits, robotics kits, electricity kits and curiosity kits.
“Nothing is more exciting to me than to see kids who come in here,” McMann said. “We like it when people just come in and play.”
The “educational” and “developmental” toys in g. whillikers are designed to hold childrens’ interest long after Christmas afternoon passes.
“There’s nothing wrong with other toys, but our toys run on imagination, not batteries,” McMann concluded.
