Headmaster Michael Vargo of Wakefield Country Day School at Huntly announced that Jacob Konick of Washington, Va. and Travis Williams of Flint Hill, received letters of commendation in the 1999 National Merit Scholarship Program. WCDS seniors were well represented in this nationwide program with 45 percent of the graduating class receiving the letter of commendation.
Commended students are those students who placed among the top five percent of more than one million students who entered the 1999 program by taking the 1997 Preliminary SAT/National 'Merit Scholarship qualifying test.

Wakefield Country Day School boys cross country team captured the Delaney Conference Championship at the difficult 3.1 mile course in The Plains with a 10 point lead over the second place Quantico High School team. The meet was the culmination of a very strong season.
The Wakefield boys team placed four runners in the top 10 of 75 participants. Seniors Sanjeev Ranade and Richard McCann placed third and fourth; Junior Peter Hickson placed fifth; and Freshman David Hickson placed ninth. The depth of the team was evident with strong finishes by Charles Cowherd, Leonard Cowherd, Billy Bunning, Alex Knight and Sam Wood.
The WCDS girls team, led by Heather Cooper, Kate Prahlad, Caroline Lalonde and Liz Williams, finished a strong sixth in a field of 10 teams.
Eleven private schools were represented in the Delaney Conference Cross Country Championship Meet.
