Gannon has and his wife Joan opened the Old Sperryville Bookshop in October, which now occupies much of their time. They provide literary events and special guest lectures through the shop. Gannon also finds time to serve on the Library Board and the Rappahannock League for Environmental Protection. He has been an active advocate for environmental issues in the county and attends most county meetings where he speaks eloquently in support of preserving the environment and the rural nature of the county.
