Too many trucks
Pedestrian safety, majority voice
should prevail in traffic issue
Once again the issue of truck traffic through Main
Street in Sperryville has been the major topic of
concern at a meeting of the Sperryville Gateway Committee. Ana, once again, we agree with citizens who oppose truck traffic through the narrow street.
We’ve heard from the truckers side though and they have a point when they say the turn at U.S. 522 to get to U.S. 211 and the U.S. 211 turn are hard for trucks to make. If trucks are coming from Culpeper why not take Route 229 to U.S. 211 and avoid Sperryville’s intersection all together? The route would be only several miles longer and it would avoid incidents such as the recent one involving a senior citizen who got knocked into a rose bush because a truck was speeding past. ; Pedestrian safety is a major concern as evidenced by the committee’s recent survey. Apparently the committee will be able to apply for state transportation funds and the federal government will match local funds, which can include those from the state on an £0/20 basis. That would help fund the improvements the county plans for the intersection of U.S. 522/211 and possibly eliminate the problem for Sperryville of speeding truck traffic on Main Street.
