Dodd firmly believes that art should be fun. And colored pencils, she said, are portable, “you can take them anywhere with very little bother and they’re relatively inexpensive — all you need are the pencils and paper.”
She feels people who take the class will walk out satisfied and with a sense that they found something within themselves that they didn’t know they had.
Dodd is now a member of the Colored Pencil Society of America, both nationally and locally. The society works to hold manufacturers to standards and make supplies properly. ,
Colored pencil as a medium is also being recognized on the national level, she said, and works of art in colored pencil are being accepted in galleries and bringing high prices.
“It’s not what you did in grade school,” laughs Dodd. “I’ve really got a unique style of teaching, very open and relaxed, with an emphasis on fun. I probably have more fun than they do.”
Dodd said the difference in teaching adults and children is that adults are more inhibited and afraid to fail. Children will try anything, she says, especially if it’s fun. “But how can you fail if you don’t try and do it for yourself? It’s the greatest feeling to see adults come in to a class and try
