Some residents in the Sperryville area have been having some unwelcome visitors. According to game and wildlife officials, this is an annual occurrence and there isn’t much they can do about it.
Game Commissioner Jim Bankston says that this is the time of year during which bears mate. Due to that fact, plus the fact that many berries in Shenandoah National Park are not yet ripe, bears wander from the park in search of food. Bankston added that bears have “a keen sense of smell,” and therefore will be attracted to anything with a scent.
Recent incidents near Sperryville include reports of dog food and bird feed being eaten, a half-grown steer being attacked and killed, and a bear breaking into someone’s car for milk and cookies. In addition to these items, bears
