Folks, the view from Woodville is like this: NASA’s Cassini satellite is far away now, but its headed straight for earth. On Aug. 18, it will enter our gravitational field doing a not-to-shabby 43,000 mph, and it will be carrying over 70 pounds of plutonium, the deadliest substance known.
On that special day, our national space agency, in its eminent wisdom, will position Cassini 700 miles above our heads. This “fly-by” maneuver is designed to boost speed and send it on its way to Saturn like a good little satellite. The plutonium is for use later in the mission to keep electrical instruments functioning. NASA would not delay the mission to install a solar-powered equivalent.
It has taken me a long time to find the courage to write this article. But at least another eight Pu-fue'led satellite launches are planned. The drive to dominate and control outer space, whether by the U. S. Space Command or any Other military power, is a poor justification for the excessive risk to life posed by spacebased weapons and nuclear power. That is surely the height of arrogance, to the point of insanity!
