According to some residents, bears are becoming less afraid of people and pose an increasing danger. Bankston, however, thinks that the problems we have had so far this year are “nothing out of the ordinary.”
Dennis Martin, Resident Biologist and Black Bear Project Leader for the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries, agrees with Bankston. He acknowledges that while there have been many complaints, the number of incidents is “probably not higher than what we’ve seen in the past.”
Bankston does, however, want people to be aware that bears are roaming over a large area. He suggests that the best thing for people to do is remove anything that might attract bears.
