Several years ago, a group of concerned parents got together here in the county to try and find a way to direct more support, both financial and philosophical, toward our county public schools. As they discussed how to go about directing this support, a seed of an idea was planted. The idea was to start a Public Education Foundation.
The group of parents knew that Public Education Foundations already existed in many communities across the United States, and they began gathering information from many of these successful education foundations. Soon, a name and missipn statement was born: Headwaters, the Rappahannock County Public Education Foundation, would foster educational excellence by cultivating the cooperative spirit and resources of the whole community to benefit all students.
Following Headwaters’ incorporation and non-profit designation in the spring of 1997, the group of parents found their seed of an idea had grown into a living, breathing organization. And not only grown, but it was receiving active support from many in the Rappahannock community.
Today, as Headwaters moves into its third year of providing support to our county public schools, it is amazing to see how much has been accomplished by such a young organization.
