Meg and I discussed the two trees’ reaction to the drought, now in its second year.
“The Red Maple is native to the New World,” Meg said. “This kind of drought has occurred before in its long evolutionary history. It’s not new to the species.”
“So,” I surmised, “the Norway Maple is native to Europe where this kind of drought doesn’t happen.”
Knowing that this leaf loss was a valid reaction to the lack of water by the Norway Maples helped me to understand the situation. It was good to have a visiting expert. Meg’s book on her work, “Life in the Treetops,” has just been published by Yale University Press. She brought me a copy.
