we have initiated extensive training and support for adult and student mentors and began pairing students with mentors. This program is currently expanding into peer mentoring, and has started to match 12th graders at RCHS with entering eighth graders.
Besides these programs, Headwaters has set new objectives for 1999-2000, which include:
• A focus on college guidance.
• A community based program for teens. This Youth Development program will try to determine what the needs are for teens in the county, and what direction we should take in meeting these needs.
• A continued focus on strengthening the reading skills of first graders at RCES. The “Book Buddies for Reading Success” program, for which Headwaters helped secure funding, proved extremely valuable this last spring. Headwaters will be working with RCES to find funding in order to continue the program.
• Expanded summer projects, which will continue to provide fun and enriching summer experiences for children.
• Pilot projects to increase parent/school involvement.
• Research on national educational trends and solutions in order
