out through the branches and twigs, and into the foliage. From there, after doing its job of carrying nutrients into the leaves, water is released into the air in an invisible spray, somewhat like a hose turned to produce a very fine mist.
This explains why it is noticeably cooler under my maple when I walk into its shade from the intense sunlight on hot July days. Water has cooled the air.
Odd thing is that the smaller native tree, the Red Maple that grows only a few yards from the introduced Norway Maple, is not shedding any of its leaves. Leaf shape and size of the two trees is very different. The Norway Maple’s leaves are much larger and of a darker shade of green than the delicately toothed and lobed Red Maple. The foliage of the two trees intermingle to give splendid shade in the side yard.
