Wildflower license plates will start sprouting on car bumpers thanks to a newly approved specialty plate benefiting Operation Wildflower, the Virginia Department of Transportation’s (VDOT’s) highway beautification program.
The new plate, which features a spray of Bachelor’s Button, Plains Coreopsis and Queen Anne’s Lace, will be available at Department of Motor Vehicle offices once 350 pre-paid applications are received.
The cost of the Wildflower plate is $25 per year, which is in addition to the vehicle registration fee. After the first 1,000 plates are purchased, $15 from each additional plate will go to Operation Wildflower. Those funds will be used for extra seed packets, special plantings and an expanded marketing effort.
The plate’s idea and design originated with VDOT and Pat Brewster, Chair of the Virginia Federation of Garden Clubs. Legislation was subsequently introduced by State Senator Walter Stosch of Henrico County in the 1999 General Assembly session.
