The Rappahannock Library’s Stunmer Reading Program came to a close Saturday afternoon with a urogram by Puppets with Pizzazz, prizes and awards for the children who took part, and refreshments for everyone.
The theme this summer was “Read Around the World”, and Mimi Butler and Jim Tucker took us on a quick circumnavigation of the globe. We left from Scotland, where Nessie, the Loch Ness Monster was just hatched and searching for her mother. She was sure Jim had simply lost or mislaid his long green tail and was truly her mom!
We fled to Egypt, then made a quick stop in India, where the pink elephant persuaded Mrs. Mullaney to come up from the audience and pull the flower which was a disguised water pistol and sprayed poor Jim, who was stooping down with his back toward her!
Then we flew to Paris, France, where Mademoselle Fifi taught us some words in French (chiefly “Oui, oui”) and then back to Rappahannock County and the Rappahannock kid.
Puppets with Pizzazz have become a beloved tradition for the final program, and they and the children have a wonderful rapport.
After the trip we gave out the prizes. There were three prizes for each of the three reading groups: A grand prize of dessert and soda at the Inn in Little Washington, a first runner up’s prize, which is a check for $15, and a second runner up’s prize of a check for $10, and in case of a tie we promised duplicate prizes.
For the first time ever, there was a tie for the grand prize! Michael and Conor O’Heir both listened to 102
