The group was started in large part because the district is spread out, with no central place for people to meet. When there was an issue, there was no way of knowing how neighbors felt about it.
Mrs. Makela noted that the residents of the community were reacting to situations, rather than being proactive. “We haven’t had the same sense of community that other villages have had,” when it comes to day-to-day affairs, says Mrs. Makela.
Mrs. Makela got an idea of how the group should function from the First Thursday Education Support Group. She liked their approach of talking about issues and coming up with positive solutions. And this is one of the Amissville group’s objectives.
Mrs. Makela, who serves as vice-chair of the group, says that it’s important to get together as many people as possible to discuss ideas. Group chair Steve Miller added that “we want to represent the community.”
They wish to encourage dialogue and exchange between people. They want people in the community to get to know each other and share their thoughts and priorities, and educate the community in the process. Mrs. Makela says that knowing people makes it easier to talk with them about sensitiv 1 .sues.
