What to do if you think Y2K will be more than inconsequential: • First, take all the precautions on the list to the left. • Check with manufacturers of essential computer-controlled electronic equipment in your home to see if it may be affected. This includes fire and security alarm systems; programmable thermostats; appliances; consumer electronics; garage door openers; electronic locks, and any other electronic equipment in which an operation is controlled by an “embedded chip.” • Stock “disaster supplies” to last a week. This includes nonperishable foods, stored water, and an ample supply of prescription and nonprescription medications. Don’t forget warm clothing. • Have extra cash or traveler’s checks on hand and in a in a safe place, in case financial transactions cannot be processed electronically. Withdraw money from the bank in small amounts well in advance of 12/31/99. • Be prepared to relocate to a shelter during a power outage or if officials request that you leave your home.
