species. Nestlings have to be kept warm by brooding adults until their “thermostats” are functioning and they become warm-blooded.
This is one way in which birds indicate their evolutionary ancestors: reptiles. Snakes and lizards are permanently cold-blooded and always the same temperature as the world around them. Reptilelike scales on the legs and feet of birds tell the same story.
Lack of water is another matter entirely for birds. They need water just as we do. Yet, in proportion to body size, o birds require much less water than do humans.
A diet of insects and berries provides a lot of the liquid requirement for birds, so a constant intake of water is not essential. Newly hatched song birds in a nest receive no water; their liquid requirement is provided through the food fed to them by adults.
Many who try to raise abandoned nestlings — or seemingly abandoned fledglings — make the mistake of giving the young bird water in a medicine dropper. This often kills the bird one wants to save. Food should be dipped in warm water before feeding. That will be sufficient.
