The good news is that they expect to be ready for Jan. 1, 2000. All five companies report that over 90 percent of their systems, including all critical sys• terns, are already compliant. ; Everyone expects to have the | remaining systems ready by the j end of September. And all report that they have contingency plans in place just in case something goes wrong.
One concern that many people seem to have concerns power grids. The northeastern U.S. is on one main grid. If, for instance, the grid in Maine goes down it could affect us in Virginia.
It is not likely, however, as Renee Daniels of Rappahannock Electric Cooperative points out that Virginia can be isolated from other states if grids start to go down elsewhere. “A lot of people dop’t realize we have safeguards in place,” says Ms. Daniels. She added that they plan to have extra people on duty during New Year’s weekend.
Local banks
