Having been chastised by
Ben Jones for failing to refute his commentary on “separation of church and state,” I offer the following. Please remember that the term “separation of church and state” is not in the Constitution.
The Court created the doctrine based on what it claimed uns the intent of the First Ammdment as expressed by Thomas Jefferson.
First, some popular myths need to be put to rest. The fact is that Mr. Jefferson did not write or even sign the Constitution; nor was he present at the Constitutional Convention of 1787. He was not present When the First Amendment and religious freedom were debated in the first session of Congress in 1789.
He was in France, serving as a U.S. Minister. Since he was not a part of the debates and did not hear all the comments of the participants in the debates, his comments on the First Amendment are “second-hand” information and not a primary source for. understanding the intent of those who did debate, draft, and sign the documents.
