Many things people think they know about bats are not true. Bats are not blind, they are not rodents, and they will not attack you or get tangled in your hair.
The truth is, bats are among the most gentle, beneficial and necessary animals on earth.
Bats often make people think of vampires, creatures of the night, and Halloween. Beyond the myths and folklore, bats are an important group of animals. Bats are one of the most numerous kinds of mammals with nearly a thousand different species.
They are highly adapted animals, and can be found in all but the coldest habitats. Most Virginia Piedmont residents have seen a bat darting through the air at dusk on a summer evening. There are about a dozen different bats that make our area their home.
Bats are mammals that belong to the order Chiroptera (ky-roptera), which means, “winged hand”. A bat’s wing is very close in structure to a human hand. They have four fingers and a thumb. Their arm is made up of a forearm, an elbow, and an upper arm. The fingers are very long and support a thin leathery skin that makes their wings. A bat can change his wing shape as easily and as quickly as you can move the fingers on your hand.
