In her piece, Highland Day”, a painting of the highlands in Scotland, Cox has executed a beautiful painting which just glimpses the tops of two houses. Very strong directional diagonals lead the viewer into the middle ground of the composition.
Yet, it is the repetition of verticals - the telephone poles and the chimneys that create intrigue in the piece. The far right pole is the anchor in the painting; it balances and unifies the entire piece. Overall, the painting speaks of a vast sweep of space characterized by vibrant color. Again, color complements push the eye across the paper, red plays off green, purple off yellow, and the effect is marvelous.
If you’ve never been to an art show, this would be a great one to start with. If you’re a veteran of the arts, you won’t want to miss “Following the Light” at Longview Gallery. With its bold display of light and color, the Eleanor Cox watercolor exhibition is a visual treat!
