Halloween and Thanksgiving are the time for pumpkins, but not many are home grown. It’s a safe bet that most of them come from the supermarket.

We carve jack o’lanterns, bake pies, and eat roasted pumpkin seeds, but few gardeners plant them anymore.

Growing pumpkins is very much the same as growing squash or cucumbers, they’re all in the same family.

The seed is planted as soon as the ground is warm enough. After they sprout, you thin the plants to the most healthy two or three plants. Pumpkins need a long growing season from 75 to 100 frost free days.

There are many different kind of pumpkin seeds to choose from. The jack o’lantern pumpkin is a standard field pumpkin and is usually planted between rows of corn. It is excellent for Halloween carving and cook
