According to the American Motorcycle Club, motorcycle fatalities among older riders began increasing in 1998. Between 1994 and 1999, deaths among bikers age 35 and older rose by 59 percent, while fatalities fell by 22 percent among those 34 and younger. For the first time ever, older riders made up the majority of those killed.
The fascination with the motorcycle has been embraced not only by aging baby boomers but also by women who account for six percent of new bike purchases, substantially up from a decade ago.
“Women are tired of being passengers and want to be their own pilots,” Mr. Paolicelli of Amissville said.
