Mulching is a very simple preventative measure for guarding against drought stress yet I still see lots of gardens with bare soil. Uncovered ground allows precious moisture to escape and leaves plant roots subject to withering heat. I've also heard the commonly held belief that mulch will encourage pest problems. It is true that more insects will burrow under mulch, but the beneficial insects that will be attracted to a mulched garden will happily gobble up those pests.
A good, deep mulch of sixeight inches could make the critical difference in whether a garden survives or succumbs to drought. Straw is<jthe best mulch, being light reflective, permeable and a renewable resource. It looks great in a vegetable garden, though not everyone will like the look of it in the perennial border.
