When art is successful it momentarily suspends reality and you see the world a little differently.
Walking into the exhibition of Antonia Walker’s paintings in Long View Gallery is like visiting ah idyllic place, untouched by time or the realities of modern life.
Ms. Walker’s world is a comfortable natural place of timeless beauty.
Most of the paintings in the exhibit are rural scenes from the French and Virginia countryside.
Although the scenes of France are painted with a palette of warm Mediterranean colors and the Virginia paintings are in the characteristic blues and greens, both express Ms. Walker’s soothing, peaceful view of nature.
Underlying the serene surface is Ms. Walker’s message that these treasured rural places are vanishing all too quickly.
“Clearing Skies” is a Blue Ridge scene captured as warm sunlight washes a bountiful hay field just after a storm.
The sky is alive with the soft reds and blues fractured by the natural upheaval of a passing thunderstorm.
The view is expressed in the luminosity of impressionist color, rendered by fragmented brushstrokes.
