The Sheriff also said that just because there isn’t a game warden here who is a Rappahannock resident, it does not mean there is not one present at all.
“The state can send in another game warden from the same area,” said Sherertz. “They have the resources to do this and have done so in the past.”
Lt. Owen Bullard of the Virginia Department of Game and Inland Fisheries in Fredericksburg, agreed.
“Rappahannock will not be without oversight,” he said.
Rappahannock County falls under District 54, along with Fauquier, Culpeper, Madison and Greene. Normally, there are seven resident game wardens in the district—two in Culpeper, two in Fauquier, one in Rappahannock, one in Madison and one in Greene. Right now, there is just one in Fauquier and one in Madison.
Capt. Dabney Watts, law enforcement manager for Region 5 of the Department of Game and Inland Fisheries said two more wardens will be in place within the next few months.
“We are taking steps to provide extra coverage for District 54,” he said. “We will bring in wardens from other districts to provide oversight until we have the rest of the resident game wardens in place.”
