We have never elected a president who voted against supplying the funds to support our troops after he voted to send them to war, as Kerry did in opposing the $87 billion needed by American forces in Afghanistan and Iraq.
President Bush can be faulted fairly for lacking a plan to secure the peace after toppling Saddam in Iraq. The Pentagon botched the postSaddam phase in Iraq, with too few troops to suppress the insurgency, and too slow an effort to rebuild and reach out to the Iraqis. But even so the Iraqi people still have a good chance to hold elections, create a government, and build a peaceful democracy in the Middle East, and this chance must not be lost.
