Historically, most churches have questioned what their rightful role in the acknowledgement of Halloween should be. because of its association with All Saints Eve.
One Sperryville church, Reynolds Memorial Baptist, has found a possible answer by providing a safe event that is a fun Christian learning opportunity at the same time. Organized by the senior high youth, HolyWeen will take place at the church on Sunday, Oct. 31 from 7-9 p.m.
The Holy-Ween party for kids of all ages includes traditional games, prizes and a bonfire. In its tenth year, this annual event encourages kids to dress as Bible characters but this is not required.
Pastor Jon Heddleston said, “We want to provide appropriate activities for youth of all ages and the bonfire is always a blast. Adults are welcome, too.” Kids who are trick-or-treating on Halloween night can always stop by afterwards, even if it’s just to join in the fun of the bonfire.
