Former ambassador Carl Coon recalled “my buddy Walt” as a sly golf partner who would cheat shamelessly above board but make it look like he was befuddled or confused. Coon and attorney Frank Reynolds also remembered Day for the same “qualities” as a crafty poker player. Expressing many people’s sentiment, Coon stated, “With Walter around, life was never dull. I guess that’s why we all loved the old rascal so much.”
Rev. Jennings “Jenks” Hobson III, minister of Trinity Episcopal Church in Washington, took the occasion to read a framed tribute from Day’s old “Lunch Bunch” pal, Peter Kramer, who was unable to attend the memorial.
