I spoke to Josh Waddell

Sunday evening. He is a close friend of my oldest son. They grew up together.

About 18 years ago this same time of year, those two little boys went camping. With father at hand, the tiger cubs camped. Both boys were slightly smaller than the rest. They had button noses and wide eyes.

I’m hearing the voice of a man who has called from Afghanistan. How wonderful it is that our technology has advanced to the point that a young soldier can call his good old buddy from his camn at war.

It. was like talking on a walkie talkie. I said, “Hello Josh, are you there?” and after a few seconds delay, “Yeah.”

Our exchange was brief. I asked him if he was close to any violence. “Of course, I’m in Afghanistan,” he replied. “It’s all around me.”

“I’m praying for you, Josh.”

“Thank you.”

“Are you afraid?”

His “no” in reply didn’t seem as delayed as his other responses.

I said, “Josh, would you feel safer if Bush was reelected?”

Josh said that he would feel safe if President Bush was reelected. I told him I’d hand the phone back to my son so he could do some campaigning for Bush.

Oh, how this is all reminds me of the election of 1970. Back in those days we had to be 21 years old to vote. Some men were in Vietnam for two years and yet could not vote because they still
