Celts thought the presence of the otherworldly spirits made it easier for the Celtic priests to make predictions for the future.

As misguided as this is, the Celts were a superstitious people dependent upon the volatile natural world and they actually believed these prophecies would offer them a source of direction during the dark winter.

By the 800s, the influence of Christianity had spread into Celtic lands. Pope Gregory III designated Nov. 1 as All Saint’s Day, a time to honor saints and martyrs. By setting the date of this celebration to correspond with the date of the pagan festival, the church was able to bring descendants of the ancient Celts into Christianity, thus reflecting one of the basic tenets of the Christian faith—overcome evil with good.

When some of the supernatural ideas persisted in All Saints Day celebrations, the church tried to give these traditions more direction by developing All Souls Day, an occasion to recognize ^11 Christian dead. It was celebrated with bonfires, parades, and dressing up in costumes as saints.
