Jenkins Hollow — A neighbor
and I were chatting at a local market just before the presidential debates. He was bom and raised in these mountains, and I learned that he is a combat veteran who served in both Korea and Vietnam. “I like both men,” he said as we were leaving. “I just wish they would tell us the truth.”
Truth is the first casualty in politics, someone has said. This has been the most vicious political campaign in my adult lifetime, full of lies, distortion, character assassination, and fear-mongering. The news media, caught up in the drama of a very close race, have wittingly or unwittingly participated in the spin doctoring. No wonder so many Americans feel alienated and disgusted with the electoral process.
To me. the single most important issue facing us is the war in Iraq. President Bush and Senator Kerry agree that free and fair elections there are key to our ability to exit honorably and responsibly. If elections are held on time next January' as President Bush and interim Prime Minister Allavvi have promised, if all factions of the population participate and accept the results as legitimate, U.S. forces can pull back late next year to the relative security of a dozen military bases in Iraq.
