Recognizing that this was to be a challenging year for the team (their star player Alex Naime graduated last June), team members chose to dedicate the 2004 season to 1999 Wakefield Country Day School graduate Leonard Cowherd, who was killed in May of 2004 while serving his country in Iraq.
The team has been wearing arm bands with the number 12 stitched on, which was Leonard’s number when he played for WCDS.
This season, the number 12 has become particularly symbolic, since, according to Coach Gali Sanchez, “Soccer often refers to the twelfth man, the support a team receives from the bench, the crowd, and other supporters.”
That support was evident during the last game of the season for WCDS.
At the conclusion of the game, instead of the traditional “go red” cheer that generally is shouted from their huddle, the Owls called out in unison, “Leonard.”
