A large, standing-room only crowd of family and friends joined a week ago Wednesday evening at Hearthstone School in Sperryville to bid Walter Day a fond last farewell.
The memorial service was a joyous occasion as old friends reminisced about the best known ‘official curmudgeon” of Rappahannock County—a title he accepted with pride.
Walter Day, who died unexpectedly at his home in Flint Hill on Sept. 30 at the age of 81, was remembered for a long list of accomplishments and a rather amazing career that included graduating as an engineer from the U. S. Naval Academy with classmate and former President Jimmy Carter.
Friends also recalled that Day was an award-winning humorist and contributing columnist for the Rappahannock News, an accomplished watercolorist, an A. A. counselor, consultant to small businesses, “renowned inventor,” golfer, and a famous poker player around these parts.
Day also was praised for his large family of nine children, all of whom were at the service, along with many of his 16 grandchildren.
Son Donal Day acted as moderator for the informal gathering. Guest speakers shared their memories of a noteworthy citizen of the county.
