4-H Club travels
to Swine Weekend

On May 27-28, Connor Forrest, Caroline Massie and Kevin Riedel of the Rappahannock 4-H Livestock Club traveled to Suffolk, Virginia to participate in the 2nd Annual VA 4-H and FFA Youth Swine Weekend. Activities included a tour of the Tidewater Agricultural Research Center where they learned about all stages of a typical swine operation from breeding with artifical insemination to birthing and finishing. After a delicious pork dinner, Dr. Mark Estienne and Dr. Allen Harper gave presentations on swine behavior and nutrition. On Saturday, Virginia Tech associate professor, Dr. Cindy Wood conducted a seminar that allowed the 4-H club members present to be certified ini the Youth Pork Quality Assurance Program.
Following an old fashioned pig pickin’ , the Rappahannock 4-H Livestock Club competed against three other teams to earn a 4th place in lab practicum, a 3rd in the written examination and quiz bowl and a first place on an oral presentation about the importance of swine in Virginia’s economy. As the students traveled back to Rappahannock, they felt as if they had gained a better understanding of the swine industry and our role in protecting the quality of our nation’s pork production.
