Editor’s Note: This is the latest update on Allan’s 1,000 mile canoe trip and this message comes from Allan himself.

Dear friends and family:

Well, I was running out of gas at the end of May, with my first steady rainfall sort of obscuring my vision of the river, and muscles aching from too many hours of paddling each day. I was ahead of schedule, and slated to arrive in Mobile on June t>. I needed a day or so off the river. But where?

No towns nearby, me off in the swamps of the S. Alabama River, far from all civilization. Rain, rain. rain. Sucky, in a word.

Hey, wait a minute. That guy two days ago who stopped his cruiser to give me some fried chicken and sausage biscuits... didn't he give me his business card. Yeah! I wonder if my cell phone will connect with him? Yeah! So I called Johnny Womack.

“Hey Johnny, how much would you charge me to drive me over to Monroeville, AL to a motel for two days?”

“Ain’t gonna be no talk of charging you,” Johnny replied.
