The winner will also walk away with a virtual lock on his or her party’s top nomination four years from now since Virginia limits its governors to one term. The quartet of Democrats have all spent time in the legislature—two in the House of Delegates and two in the Virginia Senate. They hope to join the current lieutenant governor, Tim Kaine, in the party’s fall line-up. Central Fairfax Del. Chap Petersen, a self-proclaimed moderate, has held the fundraising edge most of the way. This week, he suggested the state pony up for full-day kindergarten for all elementary schools, a proposition that would cost tens of millions of dollars right here in Fairfax County, where only about half the schools have it.
