The Rappahannock County Board of Supervisors debated many issues on the proposed 2006 fiscal year budget Monday with some members voicing adamant disapproval of an increased budget.
Wakefield district supervisor Roger A. Welch said, “when I ran for the board of supervisors, I promised to keep taxes down and basically, I’ve done a lousy job of it. We need to operate as a county and I am disappointed in offering an increase.”
The board heard from several members of the audience, including Rappahannock County Sheriff Larry Sherertz who proposed to have the department’s budget increased to afford an additional road deputy.
That increase would cost the county approximately $90,000 to include not only salary, but amenities for the new position. Sherertz told the board that he could cut out overtime pay if he had another deputy.
