Mountain people
Bijan and Shana Selahi are ethnic Kurdish hailing originally from the Alborz mountains of Iran.
“My people are mountain people. We know all the trails around here. We need the mountains,” said Shana Sehali. The couple lived in Madison County for a number of years, but were ultimately drawn to Rappahannock.
Shana Selahi went to a lecture some years back by local author Carlton Coon where he said, “I like the Kurdish because they are tough hillbillies.” Sehali liked the comparison, became acquainted with Coon and ultimately decided that Rappahannock would be an ideal place to set up shop. Naming their deli the Mountain Cafe is meant as homage both to their new home and their old.
