years now. She's smashed up a dog pen looking for food that's never there. I leave the gate open now so she can check at her leisure. I bought “bear proof” heavy duty trash cans, with lids that don't come off without pressing hard in the center and pulling the sides. She and her cubs were stymied for a month or so, until they figured out how to wedge the can in a ditch and pry the lid off. Now I keep the can inside, in the laundry room.
This is her first appearance since last fall and I'd gotten careless and lessened my vigilance. I didn't latch the back door all the way, and she must have been looking for her favorite buffet— my garbage can.
She's gotten huge. She must be a good 400 lbs., maybe more, this year. Her head must be almost a foot and a half wide, and she
