As flu season approaches, the Rappahannock-Rapidan Health district has released a list of flu shot clinic times and locations.
Only those people at high risk of contracting serious health complications from influenza are eligible to be vaccinated at clinics prior to Oct. 24.
After that date, however, all Virginians can seek a flu shot from their private medical provider, the health department, or one of the many businesses offering shots.
“We encourage people to get vaccinated to protect themselves, their families, and their communities from the potentially serious health effects that influenza can cause, “ said Dr. Lilian Peake, district health director. “Influenza can cause fever, cough, sore throat, head ache, chills and muscle aches, and is considered a severe illness.”
High risk
According to health officials, anyone can get sick from flu, but some people have a greater chance of becoming seriously ill.
They are considered “high risk” and include:
• Ages 6 to 23 months, and also 65 years and older.
• Anyone between the ages of 2-64 with chronic medical conditions.
• Women who will be pregnant during influenza season.
• Residents of nursing homes and long-term care facilities.
• Children and adolescents on long-term aspirin therapy.
• Health-care workers in direct patient care.
