Domestic violence touches
all races, ages and economic groups. It happens to people of all educational and income levels regardless of mental or physical abilities or geographical region. It happens in dating relationships, new marriages and in longterm relationships. It happens in rural communities as often as in cities or suburbs. Eighty-five percent of the victims of domestic violence are women, but it happens to men as well. All too often we consider it none of our business and don’t reach out to help. Statistics show that in Virginia in 2004, a child died from abuse or neglect every 13 days. The number of women physically or emotionally injured is staggering. Domestic violence is the number one cause of emergency room visits by women. Our community should reach out to those adults and children in desperate situations and help them improve their lives. All people should be taught that love doesn't hurt and if it does then they should be guided to find the help they need.
