Three refusals later, she gave up.
Friend and champion amateur jockey Gregg Ryan assured Randy Rouse that he could get the horse to jump. Not a problem, Ryan said.
Two refusals later, it was back to the drawing board for the now chagrined owner-trainer.
Enter Upperville-based pro Jeff Murphy. I’ll get him to jump, he told Rouse. Watch me.
One refusal later, Murphy kept talking softly, but out came the big stick.
