Last week, while driving a friend home who lives way back in the mountains, I got the urge to grab my old Jennings compound and have a go at a deer. My supply of venison has been getting pretty low.

Quick story: When my bride wants to let me know we are running low on venison, she goes to the grocery store and buys five pounds of ground beef, and leaves it on the counter so I can see it. That’s all it takes. Where are my cammies?

Preparation is

everything

About two, weeks ago, I had gotten out all the paraphernalia it takes to go bow hunting, and my brother-inlaw gave me an old foam target he had made a number of years ago. It had been laying out in the woods, and it was still good. Believe me, that stuff is not biodegradable.

So, I had been slinging a few shafts and had limbered up the bow arm a bit. I felt the capability was still there. I found a handful of good, straight arrows and sharpened some broadheads and I was ready.

Last Thursday was a bit windy, but it began to lay about 5:00 p.m., and I struggled with my climbing tree stand to get myself up into a nice straight ash tree, about 15 feet off the ground. The doe made her appearance about 5:30. She was fat and sleek, but did not present a decent shot for some time.
