opening their hearts and wallets to aid the victims of Hurricanes Katrina and Rita, I would like to simultaneously congratulate them and ask them not to forget those in desperate situations in our own state. Incidents of domestic abuse are at epic proportions not only around the world, but in our own backyards as well. Nationwide a woman is beaten by her partner every 12 seconds. Statistics show that in Virginia every 5.5 hours a victim seeking shelter from a domestic violence program is denied for lack of space.
There are a variety of ways that we an help. For the month of October wear a purple ribbon to show your support. Volunteer or donate items or money to our local domestic violence program, SAFE (825-8876). Donate old cell phones to your shelter so that they can be refurbished and given to those who need them most.
