With the assistance and collaboration of the Center for the Study of Local Knowledge at UVA’s Carter G. Woodson Institute for Afro-American and African Studies, the Scrabble School Preservation Foundation has undertaken a project to research and document the history of Scrabble School.
Alumni of the school are asked to bring in their photographs, certificates, report cards, letters from teachers, and any other artifacts representing the history and life of the school and surrounding community for tiie “History Harvest.”
These items will be scanned on-site, labeled as to their origins and meaning, and immediately returned to the owners.
In addition, alumni who are willing to be interviewed for the history project should brush off their memories and come ready to share them.
No oral or printed materials will be used publicly without the express written permission of the interviewees, who will have a chance to review their transcripts before giving final permission.
The Center for the Study of Local Knowledge is a Ford Foundation grant-funded initiative that seeks to bridge the traditional divide between universities and local communities by creating new models for intellectual and social exchange between academic and lay scholars.
